Who you are (the official version)?

Susan Varty, co-founder of Social Tactics, has been providing writing services, digital strategy, and technology advice to small businesses and corporate clients since 2006. With a strong background in enterprise software, she is a non-traditional marketer and power social media user/blogger. Susan also teaches business communications at Seneca College and is the Director of Digital Strategy for HeadStart Solutions.

Who you are (the unofficial version)—3 things that are unique about you?

I sing with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra twice a year, love anything web-related and like to watch The Big Bang Theory.

What are you passionate about?

Educating others about their personal brand and making them more aware of their digital “footprint”.

LinkedIn to find candidates for HeadStart’s clients, Twitter to find out industry news and talk with my network.

What Social Platform/Media/Software companies do you think are BRILLIANT and hot right now?

Mobile and analytics-related products and services.

What are the top three people whose social media persona you admire and follow?  Why?

Poets who provide reflection, people who talk about tech, companies that share their knowledge/expertise in their industry.

When you think of HR (Human Resources) and Social Media, where does your brain go?

Some companies don’t participate in social media because of audit and industry rules, but it doesn’t mean they can’t leverage what’s out there right now, take it in-house and work towards change one step at a time.

Not giving employees access to social media or training in public relations/communications.

What are your thoughts about the role social media can play in “workplace engagement”?

People thrive on acknowledgement, being heard and having some control over their career. Social Media – including internal tools (not just Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter) – can be used for daily workplace engagement.

Who was the best boss you ever had and why?

My former manager at an enterprise software company in Markham. She had the technical skills to support me and allowed me to take charge and do my job.

If you had a magic wand and a loudspeaker, what would be the one thing you would wish for to re-invent the workplace as we know it?

No fluorescent lighting. Seriously – a warm, inviting place to work where people want to be.
